Italy's gastronomic center, Emilia-Romagna extends along the Po River through very fertile agricultural lands. Quantity more than quality had been the emphasis for quite a long time with the sometime sweet, always red-sparkling Lambrusco accounting for much the production. Sangiovese di Romagna, planted around the hills southwest of Bologna, has begun to compete with some of the best from their neighbors to the south, Tuscany. This DOC zone, known as Colli Bolognesi or Monte San Pietro, along with the Colli Piacentini at the western edge of Emilia-Romagna, are the most respected DOC wine producing appellations.
