Located off the coast of Italy, Sardinia's viticulture plays only a small part of its total agricultural economy. The island has been slow to join the modern winemaking movement, however often the most traditionally produced wines of Sardinia can be the most exciting. The island's wines overrall tend to be higher in alcohol. Sardinia is not particularly known for its high quality wines but does have great potential, and can sometimes, produce distinctive wines from Cannanou (Grenache) and the white Vermentino. Vermentino di Gallura is the island's only DOCG where the regions combination of heat and marine winds yields a highly concentrated white wine.
