For generations, Rheingau has been the most economically successful wine region in Germany and is one of its most famous abroad.  Established by the Cisterian Monks, the church and nobility provided the discipline and organization necessary for a solid business in wine.  Making up only 3% of the total German vineyard area, Rheingau has been the source of many of the country's premier Rieslings especially when reaching Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese levels.
