Jura

Jura is located in far eastern France, between Burgundy and Switzerland, that is sufficiently isolated to have retained tradition, some unique grape varieties, and such unusual wine types as vin jaune and the occasional vin de paille, as well as another local vin de liqueur, Macvin du Jura, and a certain amount of marc du Jura. Henri Maire is the dominant wine company.  Jura's really distinctive grape variety, however, is the white savagnin, also called Naturé here, which is probably an antecedent of traminer and hence gewürztraminer. Grown to a limited extent all over the region, it is a permitted ingredient in all of its white wines but is especially known as the sole permitted variety for the extraordinary, nutty, long-lived vin jaune, sold in the distinctive 62 cl clavelin squat bottle.
