Merlot: Perched to seize the day as Oak Knoll's foremost Merlot is Blackbird Vineyards, located in the heart of the Oak Knoll District. Since 1999, this former walnut orchard, first planted with 5717 vines two years earlier, has quietly provided fruit to many of Napa's finest winemakers, for whom it has yielded astonishing reviews and stellar scorings. Purchased by entrepreneur Michael Polenske in 2003, who recognized its potential, Blackbird Vineyards is now an ultra premium label in its own right. (Fittingly, 'merlot' is French patois for 'little blackbird.')

Chardonnay: BH 92 pts "(from a full 1 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines aged in approximately 1/3 new oak with a slightly longer élevage than the prior wines). A very ripe and distinguished nose of spiced yellow fruit compote introduces textured, pure and classy medium full flavors that coat the palate with extract that completely buffers the firm acid spine that does an impeccable job of retaining focus despite all the richness on the long, pure and refined finish."

Item RD901
95% Grenache, 5% Syrah: Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 94 points "his wine always comes from the three best parcels of the estate – Les Serres, La Crau, and Guignasse. This hugely concentrated, muscular wine is very powerful, excruciatingly tannic at present, but super-rich. Yields were a low 22 hectoliters per hectare because of the drought, and this blockbuster, muscular, virile style of wine needs at least 5-6 years of bottle age and should keep for two-plus decades. It is certainly a terrific Mon Aieul, but for those who are very patient."

Item Book1
A nicely structured, lightly acidic addition to the handy Snob’s Dictionary series, decoding the baffling world of winespeak from A to Z.
Wine
Snob. The very phrase seems redundant, doesn't it? When faced with this
snobbiest of snobberies, the civilian wine enthusiast needs the help of
savvy translators like David Kamp and David Lynch. Their Wine Snob’s Dictionary
delivers witty explication of both old-school oeno-obsessions (What's
claret? Who's Michael Broadbent?) and such new-wave terms as
"malolactic fermentation" and "fruit bomb."
