Tuscany is the most important wine producing region in central Italy. The country's most historic wines have all emerged from the regions rolling hillsides and coastal vineyards. Chianti, Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano are the most famous red DOCGs with Vernaccia di San Gimignano remaining the lone white DOCG. The coastal areas of Maremma and Bolgheri are yielding more and more world class red wines while tremendous amounts of Euros are increasingly invested. Sangiovese and its local sub-varietals (Sangiovese Grosso, Prugnolo Gentile, Morellino) is far and away the most popular red grape, while Trebbiano and Malvasia dominate white production. Vin Santo is a historic sweet wine of the Tuscany.

Sangiovese: ST, International Wine Cellar 95 pts "Impressive dark ruby color. Expressive aromas of blackcurrant, plum, mint and cigar box, all lifted by a mineral element. Dense and rich, combining pinot noir-like texture and refinement with syrah-like flavors of rare meat and raspberry liqueur. This boasts a wonderfully tactile feel and a remarkably long, palate-staining finish. A great Chianti with loads of personality."

Sangiovese: AG, Wine Advocate 94 pts "The 2004 Fontalloro (100% Sangiovese) comes across as fresher and brighter than the Rancia. Light on its feet, this graceful, delicate wine opens with sweet, perfumed aromatics that meld into raspberries, flowers, spices and a touch of sweet oak that lingers on the finish. It offers remarkable clarity and precision in a pure, focused style, with superb balance and finessed tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2019."

Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon: AG, Wine Advocate 95 pts "The 2004 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo is an explosive wine endowed with a layered, sumptuous expression of sweet dark fruit. Menthol, licorice and floral overtones develop in the glass, adding further complexity. This stunningly beautiful wine offers tremendous persistence yet it will require patience as its structural components are formidable."

Sangiovese: WA 96 points "Manetti-s 2004 Flaccianello della Pieve (100% Sangiovese aged in 100% new oak) is simply stunning. Fresh and vibrant, it offers compelling aromatics and endless layers of fruit that develop in the glass, with superb length on the palate and gorgeous overall balance. Although it is still holding back much today, make no mistake about it, Flaccianello is one of Italy-s blue-chip wines and the 2004 is a profound vintage for this wine."

Sangiovese, Alicante, Syrah: AG, Wine Advocate 91 pts "The 2005 Aragone naturally displays greater depth and richness than the Morellino. It offers outstanding length and notable poise in its expression of sweet black cherries, wild herbs and earthiness. Though full-bodied and expansive on the palate, the 2005 doesn’t quite have the clarity or precision of the gorgeous 2004, but that is simply a factor of the weaker vintage. Aragone is 85% Sangiovese, with smaller portions of Alicante, Syrah, Ciliegiolo and Colorino. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2017."
