Surrounded on all sides by the Alps, Piedmont is a qualitatively outstanding and highly distinctive wine region located in north west Italy. Due to its proximity to France, along with the fact that it was ruled by the Francaphones until the 19th century, Piedmont's viticulture is the most stable and evolved in Italy. Nebbiolo is the region's most grown successful grape and is responsible for some of Italy's best wines especially when grown in Barolo and Barbaresco. Barbera and Dolcetto account for a bulk of red wine production, while Arneis and Cortese can produce distinctive white wines in Roero and Gavi.

Nebbiolo: AG, Wine Advocate 94 pts
"Altare’s 2004 Langhe Arborina is sublime. Made from Altare’s parcel in the Arborina vineyard and aged 12 months in oak, it presents a dazzling array of flowers, spices, ripe fruit and sweet toasted oak, all delicately woven into a soft-textured frame of extraordinary delicacy, with notable length on the palate, and fine, silky tannins to round out the finish. Hard to resist now, it will be even better with a few years of cellaring. The stunning 2004 Langhe Arborina is not to be missed."

"The estate’s 2004 Barolo Bricco Fiasco is made in a slightly sweeter, but more linear, style than the Margheria. It reveals a concentrated expression of the hallmark qualities of this Castiglione Falletto vineyard in its perfumed aromatics, ripe red cherries, menthol and baking spices. With air the wine turns more muscular as it gains volume and depth in the glass. This is a beautiful and refined Bricco Fiasco from proprietor Luigi Scavino."
