Alsace is located on the eastern border of France along the Rhine river in the Vosages mountains and produces around 90 percent varietal white wines. The weather plays a major role in Alsace with frigid winters, mild springs, and generally dry, hot summers. Riesling is the most widely planted grape, accounting for nearly 20% of the total area under vine. Other major varietals include Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner, Muscat, and Chasselas. Wine styles can vary from, the highly-undervalued, sparkling Cremant d'Alsace, to dry full-bodied Gewurztraminer, to the sweet Vendage Tardive wines.

"Boxler’s 2004 Pinot Gris Sommerberg displays a smoky, charred meat nose, a creamy, brown spice-inflected, caramelized peach palate with mocha-coffee undertones, and a sizzling spice and pungent smokiness in the finish. This is not only extroverted, but frankly much more obvious in ripeness and personality than its vintage siblings – which is by no means written to suggest superficiality: on the contrary, this swamps you neck-deep in super-rich fruit from the first sip. An early attention-grabber, I see no reason to defer the pleasure of its company, although 25 grams of residual sugar (which fit its personality) make for a considerable measure of sweetness."

"In a practice common but annoying in Alsace, the lowest rung on the Boxler Riesling ladder is know as 2005 Riesling Reserve, but given that it comes from lesser plots and younger vines in both the Brand and Sommerberg crus – not to mention given the quality – I suppose this is excusable! Aromas of orange blossom, lemon zest, and honeysuckle lead to a with a clear, bright, yet lush palate loaded with generous, ripe apple, peach, melon, and inner-mouth florals, and a succulent, citrus zesty, and subtly honeyed, salty and wet stone-tinged finish. This is archetypal Boxler Riesling to enjoy while one’s crus mature."
