The Bordeaux region of France is regarded as the wine world's industry capitol. Located on the Garrone and Dordogne Rivers, Bordeaux has long and esteemed fine wine history. Known for its subtle characteristics and its ability to evolve over long periods of bottle aging, practically all Bordeaux wine estates are planted with mixture of grape varieties, exact proportions varying according the location. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc are the three major red varietals of the region. The "Right Bank" of the Dordogne is dominated by the fleshy and supple Merlot grape most notably in the appellations of Pomerol and St. Emilion, supplemented in most cases by Cabernet Franc. The grad Chateaux of the "Left Bank" rely more on Cabernet Sauvignon for a bulk of the blend with varying percentages of Merlot and Cabernet Franc as blending grapes.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot: RP 97 pts
"The 2005 Ducru Beaucaillou is a 10,000-case blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot (they used to produce 18,000-20,000 cases). It is an exceptionally powerful wine with a dense purple color, superb intensity, and a beautiful, sweet nose of spring flowers, raspberries, blueberries, graphite, and creme de cassis. Full-bodied with fabulous concentration, exceptionally high tannin, good acidity, and massive layers of richness that build incrementally on the palate, this monumental effort is more structured than their outstanding 2003. It may be the finest wine produced at this estate since the 1982 and 1961 Ducrus. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2050."

"Tasting far superior than it did from cask, the bottled 2005 Laforge is fabulous. Moreover, there are 2,500 cases of this offering from the brilliant Englishman, Jonathan Malthus, who has proven he can turn quite a qualitative trick in both Bordeaux and Australia’s Barossa Valley. This dense purple-hued St.-Emilion offers up a glorious nose of graphite, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, licorice, and a whiff of acacia flowers. Full-bodied, thick, and juicy, this blend of 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc possesses terrific purity, an extravagantly rich mouthfeel, and wonderful precision. The result is a provocative, compelling wine that should be drinkable between 2013-2028."

"A Cheval Blanc look-alike, this cuvee (which includes a high percentage of Cabernet Franc) boasts an ethereal nose of raspberries, menthol, spring flowers, and hints of cedar as well as new oak. Full-bodied, exceptionally fresh, and noble, this is a complex, classic, distinctive wine that should drink well in 3-4 years, and last for two decades. It is the finest Le Dome yet made, but sadly, there are only 1,000 cases."

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot: Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 100 points "The 1990 Montrose is one of this century's monumental efforts. Dense black/purple-colored, with a tight yet potentially sensational bouquet of new saddle leather, black fruits, oriental spices, new oak, and minerals, the 1990 exhibits profound concentration of fruit, a spectacularly intense mid-palate, and massive power. One of the superstars of this superb vintage, Montrose is also one of the most concentrated, forceful, and monumental wines made in Bordeaux over recent decades."
